15,000 people enslaved in Australia
It is estimated that there are 15,000 people enduring modern slavery in Australia. This estimate is up from 4,300 as previously thought. That is for every 10,000 Australian’s, 6 of us are being held in modern slavery.

On Thursday 8th March, Hon. Paul Green MLC introduced a Modern Slavery Bill, the first of its kind in Australia.
The Bill passed the NSW Legislative Council on Thursday 3rd May.
The Bill was introduced to the NSW Legislative Assembly by the Premier of New South Wales, Hon. Gladys Berejiklian MP on Wednesday 6th June and it passed the House with amendments.
The Bill with amendments, returned to the Legislative Council on Thursday 21st June, and completed its final hurdle passing the Parliament of NSW.
New South Wales now leads the nation in tackling the crimes of human trafficking and modern slavery.
The final bill that passed the Parliament is available below:

For those who signed and collected the petition signatures, congratulations on your outstanding efforts. Over 6500 signatures were tabled in the Legislative Council in support of the Bill.
